009 Re:Cyborg has had many incarnations since its early days as a manga phenomenon in the 1960s, through to a number of TV series and films, but Kamiyama and Production I.G have created a unique contemporary anime using computer technology but with a hand drawn sensibility. They appear untouched by time, but society around them has changed dramatically, as has the idea of justice and they are forced to confront whether they still have role to play in this new world. The nine heroes gather once again to fight against this faceless menace. In 2013, skyscrapers across the world are hit by bombers with no apparent connection. But as their struggle finally restores world peace, they eventually disappear from the pages of history and from people's memory. They rebel and start to fight against their creators in the name of justice.
